If you look hard enough you really do find a lot of interesting life in the city. I was not aware that you could see Salamander's outside of the water. However I saw this one close to 70th St and Park Avenue in Manhattan. Note how it has turned white to await the approaching rain and cold of NY?

I like to keep my eyes on the ground in front of me. You can find the most interesting things, many are happy, some quite disheartening. For me one of the saddest things is to find a lost or injured bear. I was walking on 70th and Lexington and there appeared this foundling. I dialed 911 and left soon after the authorities arrived. I do not know the condition of the bear.

While this "Bath Tub Gin" is a cute gimmick on the part of my local liquor store, it points out that the DIY movement has a long history in the United States. I remember when my dad made his own batch of micro-brew in the early '70s.

Red Hook is pretty much run by cats on the West side from VanBrunt to the River. Clearly these animals were able to procure tins of food, open and consume them. I am forming a committee to train the cats to clean up after themselves.

New toys

I did some research and got an Mpeg4 video camera. I looked at the DGX301v, phillips GoGear, Sony DCM XXX (the new one that unfolds verticlly) and the one I finally decided on... The Audiovox DC400.

I think the the thing you have to resolve is how serious are you going to take this device? I feel that ultimately if you want a fuctionig camcorder go with one of those camcorders that records to dvd or cd-r. It is fine quality for the amateur and as a technology its much easier to manipulate a disk than personhandle a usb cable or SD chip and the disk holds a lot more but you are talking about $700 for such a device.. Ok its drawback is that you still have to dump your clip to mpeg4.

The new sony is high quality with stereo sound but there is no jack for an external mic. HELLO Sony? At roughly 600 bucks even on the street, I don't feel its worth it.

That leaves the toys. They all need more memory than they come with and 512mb seems to be the limit for supported memmory.

That left the audiovox as my choice as cheapest without sacerificing quality... Or lack of quality as it is.

I really enjoy winter.... I hope I can look back in a few weeks and say "I regret asking for more"... What is it about weather that makes it something we can all relate to. What else is there that rivals it? We should just build an entire set of curricula around the topic...

Housing dilemma

I'm way wicked conflicted with the problem of not owning a house.

A two bedroom apartment in a non transitional neighborhood of brooklyn within twenty min. of Manhattan will cost around 450 thousand dollars. It just feels outrageous.

What happens if there is deflation like in the late Eighties?

Ok somebody said just buy a place and if its not worth what you paid for it, that just means you're just stuck there until you pay it off.

I just don't know a way around it.

I want to get blogging into the process of understanding the new teacher hires.

My guess is the first arguements against it will be centered around something like,"they'll just use it to complain." But I think that is a perfect reason to do it. Just do it where the evironment is closed.

Only 5 more days until the official start. Like every year I'm wondering how wintery it will be. I think at one point in my life in my mid twenties I decided there couldn't be a god because the whole season thing seemed way too inefficient for an all knowing being's creation.

In any event I am ready.
